Masai Mara National Reserve –
Your guide to Kenya’s most famous
safari paradise

The Masai Mara is probably Kenya’s best-known wildlife reserve – and for good reason. If you dream of watching lion prides in the middle of the African savannah, seeing wildebeest cross the river and encountering elephant families in the wild, this is exactly the right place for you.

What makes the Masai Mara so special?

Lion hotspot:

Nowhere in Kenya is the density of lions as high as here. Sightings are almost guaranteed.

Wildlife at its purest

Alongside the Big Five, there are cheetahs, wildebeest, hippos and more – especially during the Great Migration.

Very easy to reach

Whether by plane or 4x4 – getting there is straightforward.

Perfect for first-time visitors

Plenty to see, with a wide choice of accommodation and guides.

Where is the Masai Mara?

The Masai Mara lies in south-western Kenya, right on the border with Tanzania. It is part of the wider Serengeti ecosystem – the Serengeti adjoins it directly to the south. Most visitors start their journey in Nairobi and reach the Mara by domestic flight or 4x4.

Highlight

The Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras between July and October – one of the most spectacular natural events in the world. You might be standing on the banks of the Mara River, feeling the tension – and suddenly an entire herd of wildebeest begins to cross while crocodiles lurk in the water. Pure wilderness.

Best time to visit

The best time for a safari in the Masai Mara is between July and October. These are the months of the Great Migration – millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the savannah and the Mara River. If you want to see the spectacle live, book early, as these months are popular. In the low season from December to March it’s quieter, but still teeming with wildlife. Ideally, avoid April and June – in the rainy season many tracks are hard to pass and sightings are more difficult.

Types of accommodation – what suits you?

Budget (from approx. 150 €):

Classic tented camps or simple safari lodges

Mid-range (from approx. 300 €):

Comfortable tented camps with full board

Luxury (from approx. 600 €):

High-end camps with a private guide and a top location (e.g. Governors Camp, Angama Mara)

Tip: If you want things quieter, choose accommodation in the Mara Triangle (west) or on the northern edge of the reserve.

Who is the Masai Mara ideal for?

The Masai Mara is perfect for you if you:

  • are going on safari for the first time
  • value a high likelihood of wildlife sightings
  • want to experience the "classic" African safari
  • don’t mind other tourists

Less suitable if you’re looking for complete seclusion or exclusive luxury. For that, there are alternatives such as Meru or Shaba.

What you get:

  • Goosebump moments during the Great Migration (July to Oct.)
  • Extremely high chance of seeing lions, elephants and cheetahs
  • Classic African safari with open plains, rivers & acacias
  • Huge choice of accommodation – from budget to luxury
  • The perfect introduction for your first safari in Kenya

What you DON’T get:

  • No complete solitude: The Mara is popular, especially during the migration.
  • Not a bird paradise: Birdwatchers will find better conditions elsewhere (e.g. Lake Baringo, Samburu).
  • No guarantee of all Big Five: Rhinos are rare.

Masai Mara vs. Serengeti – the classic comparison

  • Masai Mara: More compact, better lion sightings, easy to reach
  • Serengeti: Larger, more open space, animals are more spread out
  • For first-timers: The Masai Mara offers the "safari photo album" in the most compact place
FAQ

Common questions

What does SafariMarkt offer?

SafariMarkt is your neutral point of contact when you want to find out which safari in Kenya really suits you. We don’t sell trips – instead, we help you gain clarity with a carefully designed questionnaire, tailored to your travel style, your wishes and your everyday life.

We have been returning to Kenya again and again since 2014. We know the differences between the parks, types of travel and seasons – and how differently people tick on safari.
Whether you prefer to travel light or are looking for a bit more comfort: we show you what fits – and also what probably doesn’t.

How does the safari questionnaire at SafariMarkt.de work?

Our questionnaire is your personal companion on the way to the right safari – honest, calm and surprisingly in-depth. Instead of flooding you with offers, we ask you targeted questions about your travel style, your preferences, your limits and your inner expectations – including some you may never have asked yourself.

It’s not just about budget or length of trip, but about how you want to feel on safari: active or observing, secluded or sociable, open to new things or preferring to feel safely looked after.

The questionnaire learns every day, is regularly refined and is based on real experience in Kenya since 2014. At the end, you get an honest, personal assessment: what suits you well – and what you should rather avoid.

Is SafariMarkt free?

Yes – SafariMarkt is and will remain completely free for you.
You pay nothing for the questionnaire, the results or our recommendations.

Why?
Because our goal is not to sell you something – but to help you make a good decision for yourself. You get honest assessments, a neutral overview and clear guidance – with no pressure to book and no hidden fees.

How trustworthy is SafariMarkt?

SafariMarkt has no sales agenda – and that is exactly what makes us credible.
We respond solely to your answers in the questionnaire and, based on them, give you an honest assessment: what suits you – and what doesn’t. We don’t recommend any providers, earn nothing from bookings and deliberately stay independent.

Our experience comes from more than 10 years of travelling through Kenya. We know the parks, regions and types of travel – and how differently people tick when they go on safari.

Who is behind SafariMarkt?

SafariMarkt is run by a small, independent team that has been travelling regularly to Kenya for over 12 years – not as tourists, but as people with a real connection to the country. We know the National Parks, the hidden corners away from the classic routes, and the realities of the people who live there.

Our strength is connection: between travellers and landscape, between wishes and reality, between experience and openness. We are well connected, have stayed curious and place great value on respect – for nature, animals and communities.
